You’ll complete this assignment at the beginning of Week 2, September 21, 6:00 p.m. Central Standard (Minnesota) Time.
Introduction:
As we’ve already discussed, Carleton students face a number of challenges in order to succeed in their work and life at college. Each assignment, each course, each major, and the college as a whole all have their own requirements and their own standards for success in those assignments. However, in order for this process to be satisfying to you, you’ll also need to understand your personal goals. How do you define “success” in college, and how will you know when you’ve achieved it? That’s what this is all about.
Assignment:
Imagine that it’s late June, 2021. Your first year at Carleton is complete, and it was a rousing success! As you transition into the summer, take a moment to look back on the academic year and think about what made it successful, in your estimation.
Respond to the following items with at least one meaty paragraph (roughly 75-150 words) each:
1) What does it mean for the academic year to be successful, by your definition? What did you accomplish in your first three terms at Carleton? What experiences were most meaningful to you, and what did you gain from them?

2) What habits or behaviors contributed to your success? Were any of these habits or behaviors new to you? Did adopting them require you to change any old habits or behaviors?

3) How might your success have benefited other members of the Carleton community? How, in turn, did you benefit from the success of others?

4) What resources did you regularly draw on outside of class times to help you throughout the year, and how did they contribute to your success? This could include everything from the Writing Center to meetings with teachers to assistance from friends–basically anything that you might draw on to help you with your academic work qualifies as a resource.
