Closing Bookend Assignment

You’ll complete this assignment at the end of your A&I course:

Congratulations on finishing your first term as a college student! As you reflect on your semester, your time in this course, and your development as an intellectual, thinker, reader, writer, speaker, listener, and student, we would like you to revisit the questions we asked you at the beginning of the semester.

First, you should look back over the reflective writing you’ve completed this term, particularly the first bookend essay.  Then, read and respond to the questions below.

As you write, consider any differences between your answers to these questions now and your answers in the opening bookend assignment.  What, if anything, has changed? What experiences this term led to those changes?  This kind of thinking and reflection helps you consolidate what you’ve learned and lays the foundation for new knowledge and growth.

It has been a pleasure working with you this term and, again, congratulations!

In roughly 500-750 words (about 1.5-2 double-spaced pages of type) please revisit the following questions:

  • What personal skills, experiences, and strengths did you bring to college with you and how do you think about them now? Given the expectations you had for what college will be like, what particular skills and experiences emerged as assets for you in college and which ones surprised you?
  • How do you now think about written and oral communication (writing and speaking, reading and listening) will be like at the college level? How have you learned to navigate and learn more about those things, and what strategies and skills will you take into your other work in college?
  •  What were some of the challenges? Which ones were unpredictable or surprised you? How did you navigate them?

Write and edit your response in a word processor or Google Doc, then cut and paste it here…
